Frequently asked questions

Answers to the questions we hear most about this tool.

How do I convert between metric and imperial units?

Pick a category (Length, Weight or Temperature), choose the unit you have in the "From" box and the unit you want in the "To" box, then type a number. The result appears instantly, along with a full table showing the same value in every other unit. For example, switch Length to centimeters → inches to see that 30 cm is about 11.81 in, or use the swap button to flip the conversion the other way.

How do you convert Celsius to Fahrenheit and back?

To go from Celsius to Fahrenheit, multiply by 9/5 and add 32 — so 20 °C × 9 ÷ 5 + 32 = 68 °F. To go the other way, subtract 32 then multiply by 5/9 — so 98.6 °F becomes 37 °C. This converter does it for you and also handles Kelvin and Rankine, but the formulas are handy to know. Choose the Temperature tab, enter your value and read the answer instantly.

How many pounds are in a kilogram?

One kilogram equals about 2.2046 pounds, and one pound equals roughly 0.4536 kilograms. So to convert kg to lbs you multiply by 2.2046, and to go from pounds to kilograms you divide by that same number (or multiply by 0.4536). Select the Weight tab with kilograms → pounds and the tool shows the exact figure for any value you type.

Are the conversions accurate?

Yes. The conversions use the exact internationally defined factors — for instance one inch is exactly 2.54 cm, one pound is exactly 453.59237 grams, and one nautical mile is exactly 1852 meters. The only rounding is in how the answer is displayed, which you control with the precision option (from a couple of decimals up to eight, or "Auto" for a smart number of significant digits). Internally the math is done at full floating-point precision.

Is this unit converter free and private?

Completely. There is no sign-up, no limits and no ads inside the tool. Every calculation runs entirely in your browser with JavaScript, so the numbers you enter are never sent to or stored on any server — the converter even keeps working offline once the page has loaded.
